Daily Writing Exercise
This is exactly what it says. One page giving you a helping hand with your writing. It could be a ten minute exercise, it may give you the first line of a story, or it may challenge you to explore a side of writing you'd never previously considered. Useful for those moments when inspiration is out of reach, or when you just want something quick to jot down.
Be aware that this page is part of Michelle Richmond's website (a successful author herself), and she offers workshops and private writing instruction, again for a fee. US based.
Deadwood Phrases
This is a very simple page that supplies alternative words or phrases for some you may use, to make them clearer. It suggests the list is for technical documents, but it's useful even just as a guide if you're unsure about something you've written. It's simple, but effective.
Everyone Who's Anyone in Adult Trade Publishing
This is a site with the largest collection of literary agents, editors and publishers I've ever seen. The list is broken down to three areas - the US, UK and Canada - which is just as well considering there are over 2000 listed. There are no adverts or subscription fees, but do expect to see a polite request for donations. If you're looking for a basic site with an extensive list of publishers to start sending your work to, this is where to go.
JBWB - Jackie Bennett Writers Bureau
This is an extensive site offering guidelines for submitting work to specific journals, magazines, up-coming books, and so on. Whether you write short stories, poems, or non-fiction articles, you'll find something suitable for your needs. Critique and editorial services are also offered, for a fee, but this is by no means the main aim of the site. Definitely worth a look. UK based.
RhymeZone - rhyming dictionary and thesaurus
This is an intersting little site, very simple to use. Type in a word and ask it to find rhymes, synonyms, antonyms and more. You can even ask for it to find your word in a Shakespearean Search, which will give you the line, from there you can get the passage from the play or sonnet, and its exact location. With many other references, it's one to browse even just for the quotations.
Silva Rhetoricae: The Forest of Rhetoric
To quote from the front page: "This site is intended to help beginners, as well as experts, make sense of rhetoric, both on the small scale (definitions and examples of specific terms) and on the large scale (the purposes of rhetoric, the patterns into which it has fallen historically as it has been taught and practiced for 2000+ years)."
This is an excellent, valuable resource for anyone wanting to delve deeper into understanding rhetoric. Using frames, the layout looks confusing and messy, but don't be put off - it's very simple to use and cross-references well.
The Burry Man Writers Center
This is an extensive site providing advice for writers, whether fiction or non-fiction, supplying links for publishers, agents, freelance jobs, and much more. To quote from the front page, "It has become a reference site for newspapers, magazines and radio shows such as ITN Radio and Handbag.com, specializing in everything from writing to Internet usage to careers."
This is a site you can't afford to overlook. UK based.
The Story A Day Writer's Kit
This is simply a list of prompts for short stories, one for every day of the month. Some intriguing choices that can have some interesting results.
Wordup, The Writer's Resource
With links to further resources for specific genres, details of writers' groups and literary festivals in the UK, plus a handful of useful articles, ongoing awards, and more. UK based.
