'Wimmin', Jo Blair

I've travelled far but this is my home.

Yet now it seems some foreign land
Is where I grew to be a woman.
What has happened to my beautiful fields and trees?
Everywhere I look there are new estates and factories
Belching obscene filth into my air,
My friends' air,
My family's air.
Does no-one care?
Seems like they don't, can't or won't.

What has happened to the streets and communities?
Dissolved into rape, murder and obscenities.
My friends - attacked,
My family - attacked.
Who cares?
I care
And you care
And we demand justice in our hearts.
Yet our words remain unspoken.
Keep the savage beast in check,
Play the silent woman's part.
"What can we do, we're only girls?
They'll never let us conquer the world."

Listen to me
I have a plan.
We can prove we're as good as any man.
Better, even, given chance.
We have the right to prove we are strong.
That we are prepared to fight.

How many of you sit at home
Wondering for how long it must go on?
Unable to act on that which stirs your soul.
Knowing that you can build and create,
Knowing that there is more to life than a housing estate.
Chaos all around you
Especially at night, don't go out at night
Another fright,
Another car set alight.
We don't have to take it anymore.
No is such a little word
But say it very loud and you will be heard.
Once we break the ties that bind
You can see freedom on the other side,
Freedom, power and pride.
They may burn our lives
But like the phoenix we can rise.
The phoenix from the flames,
Our fire will put the rest to shame.
There must be more to life
There must be more than this.
I'll fight against these chains
And the fight will bring fresh, hot blood to my stagnant veins.
I'll shout out loud
"I'm strong, I'm proud".
I'll sing my song the way I say it should be sung.
I'll make my mark here, where I stand
On this earth, this land
To let the whole world know
I - was - here.

This is my home
Though I've travelled here and there.
While I was away I learned that every man and woman is a star
But women are creators
And we shine brighter by far.
